EAST LANSING, Mich. — East Lansing returns to class Tuesday and with most local districts now back in session experts say nearly 1 in 4 pedestrian deaths involving kids happen after school lets out and always look out for kids walking or biking.
Children might dart into the street if they're late for the bus so drivers should always drive slow in a neighborhood or school zone.
Michigan state law says when a school bus is stopped with red flashing lights drivers must stop 20 feet away from the bus.
It is illegal to continue driving passed a school bus when it is picking up students.
When yellow lights are flashing drivers can proceed with caution.
Experts say students who take a bus to school should stand at least six feet away from the curb when the bus is arriving.
Do not walk behind the school bus because the child should always want to be in the drivers line of sight.
Experts say a pedestrian struck by a car going 25 miles per hour is two-thirds less likely to be killed compared to someone struck by a car going just 10 miles faster.
