LANSING, Mich. - — Fewer people in the State of Michigan are attending a Catholic church.
The Catholic faith has long been the state's single, largest religious group, but now their numbers are shrinking.
In 2000, 23 percent of Michigan residents said they belonged to a Catholic parish.
Today, that number has declined to 18 percent.
It is not clear exactly why people in Michigan are detaching from their Catholic faith, but it is speculated that the controversy over sexual abuse in the Catholic church may be a factor.
