Eastern High School principal Donna Pohl will retire at the end of the school year after serving more than 30 years in the Lansing School District, and current Everett High School assistant principal Marcelle Carruthers has been named to replace her as the new principal at Eastern.
"The Lansing School District has a very talented team of administrators that have been a big part of our school community for many years," said Lansing School District superintendent Yvonne Caamal Canul. "Donna Pohl retires as principal at Eastern and with a great record of accomplishment and long history of service to Lansing students. Marcelle Carruthers is a legendary Eastern graduate who is a proven great leader and he will return to Eastern after many years of success at Everett High."
Marcelle Carruthers has served as the assistant principal at Everett High School since 2015 and has served as head coach of the high school's varsity football team for the past 17 seasons. Carruthers was inducted into the Eastern Athletics Hall of Fame in 2014. Carruthers was an all-state quarterback and three-sport Eastern star who went on to lead the Central Michigan University football team.
Donna Pohl has dedicated her life to education in Lansing, serving as assistant principal of Eastern High School for more than seven years before becoming principal, and leading the school for the past four years. During her tenure at Eastern, student achievement dramatically improved and the school was removed from the state priority list. Pohl has also served as both the assistant principal and principal at Pattengill Middle School. In her early career in education, Pohl's focus was on athletics and teaching physical education to students from elementary to high school grade levels.
