LANSING, Mich. — Maple Valley Junior/Senior High School and Relevant Academy of Eaton County have been chosen to host college advisers for the 2019-2020 school year as part of the Michigan College Access Network’s (MCAN) AdviseMI program. This is the fifth year of the AdviseMI program, which places recent college graduates into high schools across the state to help students navigate the complex college exploration process and increase postsecondary educational attainment rates in Michigan.

AdviseMI focuses on placing advisers in high schools with low college-going rates. Advisers supplement the work of school counselors and staff to create a college-going culture and ease the transition from high school to postsecondary education. Michigan high school counselors currently average caseloads of more than 700 students apiece, making it difficult for them to afford the time and attention necessary to equip students with customized college and career guidance.

“Now in its fifth year, we have broadened the reach of the AdviseMI program to broaden our impact on high school students to further their education beyond high school,” said Melissa Steward, director of AdviseMI. “As recent college graduates, our advisers are able to provide great insight into the college exploration process and act as an invaluable resource to students as they weigh postsecondary education options.”

New advisers will complete rigorous training throughout July and August to prepare them for fall 2019. Some advisers may split their time between two high schools to allow 56 college advisers to serve a total of 72 high schools across the state. Advisers focus on helping students research college opportunities, navigate admission tests, submit college applications, complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and enroll in postsecondary institutions.

The advisers will be recent graduates from a record number 20 partner colleges, including Adrian College, Albion College, Aquinas College, Baker College, Calvin College, Central Michigan University, Eastern Michigan University, Ferris State University, Grand Valley State University, Lake Superior State University, Kalamazoo College, Madonna University, Northern Michigan University, Oakland University, Saginaw Valley State University, Siena Heights University, University of Michigan-Dearborn, University of Michigan-Flint, Wayne State University, and Western Michigan University.
