LANSING, Mich. — As cold as it's going to be next week, a lot of drivers will be warming up their vehicles before hopping in.
There have been recent rumors saying it's bad for your engine. FOX 47 News' Carla Bayron was live in Lansing to do a little myth-busting.
Brad Lansdale, a mechanic at Grand Ledge Ford said that it's fine to leave your vehicle to warm up, but you should only leave it for a short period of time. It won't mess up the car's engine, even though there are articles online that say otherwise. Nothing really has been proven as fact.
"I would only do it for about 10 to 15 minutes, especially with the extreme cold. Get everything up to temperature. That will help get the heat going inside the car, and make it most comfortable for you," Lansdale said.
Letting your vehicle warm up just wastes fuel, Lansdale said.
What's actually better for the vehicle is for the driver to get in and go, but most chose not to, as letting the engine run for a few minutes can also get the ice off your windows.
Drivers can get a ticket for driving around with too much of it piled up
