DELTA TOWNSHIP, Mich. — The Lansing Board of Water and Light will break ground on its new natural gas power plant in Delta Township Monday.

The $500 million plan for the new Delta Energy Park power plant was approved by the BWL Board of Commissioners in March 2018.

The new gas plant will replace the BWL's remaining coal-powered plants.

The Eckert station is set to close next year and the Erickson power station is scheduled to shut down in 2025.

The BWL says the new plant, located at the Erickson Power Station facility in Delta Township, will create 1,200 construction jobs.

BWL General Manager Dick Peffley, BWL Commission Chair David Price, Delta Township Supervisor Ken Fletcher, and Lansing Mayor Andy Schor will be at Monday's groundbreaking ceremony at 3725 S. Canal Rd. in Lansing at noon.
