When the lights go on, so will the camera, capturing a day in the life of a Lansing Police Officer.
"It's going to be helpful. It's going to keep honest people honest, it's gonna help in the prosecution of crimes and the bottom line though, Ann, it's going to help with police credibility," explained Lansing's Mayor Virg Bernero.
Community leaders say this technology is the next step for the city.
Director of Community and Faith Based Initiatives, Bishop David Maxwell, explained, "There's always two sides to a story and these are stories that have to involve accuracy because it involves the reputation of police officers and it involves the liberty and rights of its citizens. And, whenever you have the technology that can solidify that record that's important."
Both Bishop Maxwell and the Mayor told FOX 47 News this City's been lucky to rarely have issues like racial tension with the Police Department. And, they agree the transparency the body cameras are expected to bring will only strengthen police and community relations.
"I do think it's an added layer of just that of trust," the Mayor said.
Bishop Maxwell added, "When that layer is there, your actions tend to be more scrutinized by your own self. And, when you're giving a report, you're giving it as you know it will reflect what that camera says."
But, Bishop Maxwell said the body cameras will just be part of the solution.
"Just having body cameras alone is not going to completely explode that mountain of problems that have been existent within cultures and communities of people of color and the Police Department. But, you fight, you chip away at that mountain one chip at a time," he said.
This time chipping away with another tool, in an effort to keep officers and the people they serve safe.
The Mayor told us he's expecting some challenges with the new technology, specifically drawing the line between providing the public with information and protecting a person's privacy.
He's working with the Chief on where the video will be stored, who will be able to access it and how long they'll hold onto it before deleting it.
