Bill to forgive snow days moves forward to House

LANSING, Mich. — Even with fresh snow in the Lansing area overnight on April 11, it wasn’t enough to close schools.

That’s not necessarily a bad thing, though, because dozens of Michigan schools ran out of snow days early in 2019. Some of those missed days may need to be made up over the summer.

A plan to give students relief is moving forward through the State Legislature. House Bill 4206 would bring the total number of snow days to 12, allowing for three more days than normal.

Schools get six days automatically and can apply to the Department of Education for three more in a typical school year.

A Bill approved by the State House Ways and Means Committee would forgive three snow days that happened while Michigan was under a State of Emergency in January.

The State House Education Committee approved the bill in March. It would allow schools to have three more days, bringing the total to 12.

Lawmakers say they want schools to know they’re working on a solution to help out.

“We recognize the time sensitive nature of again this legislation making sure that folks know, that school districts know that we're taking action and so this is going to be a priority,” said Representative Brandt Iden (R) of Oshetmo.

The Bill now heads for the Full House for review. There’s no timetable yet on when lawmakers to act on the Bill.

With only two more months left of school for most districts, they’re hoping for a decision sooner rather than later so they can finalize school calendars in the final weeks of the term.
