Bill to ban use of bridge card to pay for bottle deposit

At first the bill was going to ban people from buying pop with a bridge card. On Thursday, it was changed to just ban people from using their cards to pay for the deposit.

State representative Beau LaFave says, people who use bridge cards are taking advantage of the ten cent deposit.

He claims people are buying pop with the card, returning their bottles, and pocketing the cash to use on things that they can't pay for with a bridge card.

Some lawmakers at the hearing were pretty peeved about this bill even being discussed.

Representative Sherry Gay-Dagnogo said, ""I think it is disingenuous to even have our time spent on talking about people who would fraudulently buy a pop or milk, to be crazy enough to even go to the parking lot and pour it out to get ten cents."

FOX 47's Marcus Dash spoke with a bunch of convenience store owners who claimed that they would definitely support this bill.
