Posted

CHARLOTTE, Mich. (WSYM) - An Eaton County intersection was closed down for almost four hours Saturday afternoon when a small SUV hit a bicyclist.

A woman was riding a bicycle westbound on the side of Clinton Trail between Flanders and Brookfield roads when the small SUV, driven by a female, hit her.

It happened at 12:29 p.m.

The SUV was also traveling westbound.

The bicyclist was taken to the hospital with serious injuries.

The SUV driver was not hurt.

Eaton County Sheriff deputies aren’t sure what caused the accident, but continue to investigate.

Deputies were assisted by Charlotte Police and Fire along with Eaton Area EMS.

The Eaton County Sheriff department reminds drivers that bicyclists have the same rights as vehicles do on the road. If a vehicle cannot safely pass a bicyclist in the oncoming lane, it is not safe to pass.

Michigan law requires bicyclists to always ride with traffic, not opposite of it. It's also a good idea to wear reflective gear while riding a bicycle.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) offers addtional safety tips for bicyclists.
