Cheers throughout the room as Mayor Virg Bernero gave his final State of the City Address.
"I think it's been one hell of a ride," Charles Moore said.
Bernero says he's put Lansing on the map in the past 12 years-- and part of the speech talked about the accomplishments over the past decade, including the revitalization of Michigan Avenue and becoming a city attractive to young college grads.
He says he's not done yet though-- and talked about his plans before his term ends.
"It was interesting to hear how he wanted to pay for a new city hall, and what's coming for the west side neighborhoods, since that's one of my neighborhoods," Josh Hovey said.
He also laid groundwork for the future, saying that Lansing should form a metro council, which would bring together the regional governments of metro Lansing. From there the mayor says they could create regional funding-- improving all of metro Lansing.
"Set a vision for the future,” Moore said. “And basically told us how to create enough revenue to improve roads."
"His plans for the future broadly are what we need,” Farhan Bhatti said. “We need forward thinking in Lansing."
Not everybody was in favor of Bernero's speech. One of our Facebook users commented on our page saying ‘I only watched a few minutes of him. Out of it I heard three different ways he wanted to raise taxes. What a loser."
Dwight Washington overall liked the speech, but says he wished Bernero spoke a little more on the improvements to the environment.
"The Red Cedar renaissance is one thing he did make reference to,” Washington said. “But I wish he would've talked a little more about how the community's going to be involved and how they're going to take some of the work the community did to make that a vision that all of Lansing can be proud of."
