Bay City commission approves 'welcoming city' resolution

Posted

Leaders in Bay City have voted to recognize the community as a "welcoming city."

The Bay City Times reports the resolution approved 7-1 on Monday by the Bay City Commission was introduced by the Mid-Michigan Progressive Democrats earlier this year.

The vote came after Commission President Larry Elliott amended the resolution to remove a section that said the city would "promote policies and programs that foster inclusion for all and serve its residents regardless of their immigration or refugee status."

Commissioner Lynn Stamiris voted no, saying "Bay City has always been a welcoming city."

The resolution approved Monday asks the city to call on Congress to "immediately move forward with thoughtful and comprehensive immigration legislation that grows the national and local economies while respecting all residents and families."
