Bath schools taking steps to fight bed bugs

Posted

Like a disease, if a problem is detected early, the less of an issue it turns out to be.

Bath Schools Thursday encountered a bed bug, and are now working to make sure an infestation doesn't occur.

The bug was found in a classroom, and the teacher that located it was smart enough to save the bug for later identification.

Matt Dodson is the Principal at Bath High School. He talked to FOX 47's Kellan Buddy about the situation.

"Luckily we found it, they talk about how these things happen, and you don't know about it, or you find out after you have an issue with some sort of infestation, luckily we're not in that situation," Dodson said. "We can be proactive and take care of it before it becomes an issue."

Sniffing dogs were brought in to locate more troublesome areas at the high school, and the elementary school.

"Educate the parents, educate the kids, get them resources, and then quarantine those areas so the kids aren't being exposed in any capacity," Dodson added.

He believes that administration has taken every step to be honest and up front with the people that they serve.

"We always err on the side of going above and beyond, overkill, to make sure that we're not going to miss something, so that we know in good faith, good conscious, that we've done everything that we can possibly do to take care of something like this."

The school plans to fumigate the areas within the schools on Saturday, and hope that their school will be bug-free once again on Monday.
