LANSING, Mich. — People inexperienced in kayaking and canoeing are being asked to avoid using local rivers in western Michigan due to fast currents, authorities said.
The Kent County sheriff’s office in Grand Rapids said recent rain and the faster water flow is making maneuvering on rivers difficult, according to WOOD-TV.
Obstacles also may have shifted in the water.
Several water rescues have had to be made.
“Though we are experiencing a beautiful spring with warmer temperatures and sunshine, the water is still very cold,” the sheriff’s office said in a Facebook post. “Sudden immersion in cold water can lead to ‘cold shock.’”
