EAST LANSING, Mich. — The East Lansing Farmers Market hosted the Spartan Appreciation Day and the Unity Project on Sunday, Sept. 8 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m at Valley Court Park.
The first 150 MSU students who attended the market and showed their college student ID at the information booth received a free reusable ELFM bag, a $2 gift certificate to the market and downtown East Lansing coupons.
The Unity Project is an interactive art installation sponsored by the East Lansing Arts Commission.
The Unity Project was first hosted at the ELFM last year.
The intention of the installation is to "raise consciousness about that labels we give ourselves and others and explore how those labels both support and limit building interconnected, interesting communities," according to the project's website.
The installation involves 32 posts with "identifiers."
Identifiers are ways people identify themselves such as being a parent, speaking English as a second language, identifying as LGBTQ+.
There are hundreds of ways to identify yourself, the project focuses on 32.
Participants tie yarn to the posts that best reflect their identity which creates a web that intertwines with other pieces of yarn, symbolizing unity.
Live music at the market will include the Dangling Participles and Taylor Taylor.
The farmers market ends Oct. 27.
