LANSING, Mich. — For the second year, the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Commission of Mid Michigan Art Contest is underway thanks to the support of Delta Dental of Michigan, the MSU Broad Art Lab and the MLK Jr. Commission of Mid-Michigan.

The 2020 MLK Jr. Commission of Mid-Michigan Art Contest is an opportunity for local artists to showcase their talents while honoring the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

“We are honored to join Delta Dental of Michigan and the MSU Broad in hosting this community art contest. Art has a way of evoking ideas, sentiments and emotions in ways sometimes words cannot. We believe this is another avenue to promote the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.,” said Elaine Hardy, chairperson of the commission.

Categories for entry include students in grade 6-8, students in grade 9-12 and adults. Cash prizes will be awarded ranging from $150-$1,000.

This year’s theme is “There comes a time when silence is betrayal.” Art entries must be relevant and consistent with the theme and be accompanied with a 250-word narrative that explains the concept of the piece and its relation to social justice/inequity.

The top 20 artists will have their work on display at the MSU Broad Art Lab the week of January 14-21 and winners will be honored during a January 14 reception at the MSU Broad Art Lab as well as the January 20 MLK luncheon put on by the MLK Jr. Commission of Mid-Michigan.

Entries are due 1 p.m. Friday, January 3.
