LANSING, Mich. — What started as a domestic dispute escalated into a standoff situation with Lansing police on Wednesday, September 11.
The man involved was Michael Paul Bensinger, 28, of Lansing, according to Lansing Police Public Information Director, Robert Merritt.
He says that Bensinger was arrested and formally charged with:
Count 1: Police Officer – Obstruction/Resisting/Assaulting (Felony)
and
Count 2: Domestic Assault (Misdemeanor)
He was arraigned at the 54-A District Court with a bond of $10,000.
At 8:50 a.m. Wednesday morning the couple left the home peacefully after negotiating with police.
Previously, at 4:30 a.m., police responded to a domestic dispute at the home in the 600 block of Seymour Ave. near Lapeer St.
Police say the man refused to allow them inside, which led to a standoff lasting almost five hours.
"It's quite the visual with the police cars and command center, what have you, but that's what we do. That's what our tactical team does. That's what they train for is they just want to make sure everyone is safe and we bring this to a peaceful resolution," Police said.
When the couple walked out of the home around 9 a.m., they were ushered to a police vehicle.
The other half of the couple, a 22-year-old woman, was not arrested.
Police are questioning her because they consider this matter as an assault.
Police also confirmed the two individuals are in a relationship.
There were no known weapons on the couple when they exited the home, and police say neither of them were hurt.
Bensinger is scheduled to be in court again in front of Judge Alderson on the following dates:
Probable Cause Conference: 9/20/19 @ 9:00 a.m.
Preliminary Exam: 9/27/19 @ 9:00 a.m.
