Republican Bill Schuette says Michigan's expansion of Medicaid coverage to hundreds of thousands of adults is not "going anywhere" if he is elected governor and he would focus instead on implementing work requirements enacted earlier this year.
Schuette, who has staunchly opposed the federal health care law -- including the Medicaid expansion -- as state attorney general, spoke to The Associated Press on Wednesday.
Asked if he would keep the expansion in place, he said: "The fact is Healthy Michigan is the law. It's not going anywhere."
The statement suggests that Schuette would not try to end the program enacted in 2013 by Republican Gov. Rick Snyder and the GOP-led Legislature.
Democrats, including gubernatorial candidate Gretchen Whitmer, say Schuette would strip the coverage. Schuette says it is a "scare tactic."
