LANSING, Mich. — The Lansing Police are reminding residents to not be scammed on the phone.
On Tuesday they shared a tip regrading an arrest warrant scam that they say has "resurfaced" in the area.
They said that they would never call and ask a resident to pay for a warrant over the phone, or by purchasing a gift card.
Here's how they say it works:
Someone calls and states they are with the L.P.D. or local police.
They may even give a real name of an actual employee.
They can often verify the victim's name, address, and date of birth.
The scammer then informs the person that there is an arrest warrant out for their arrest and that they have to pay a specific amount in order for the warrant to be dismissed.
They will often ask the victim to purchase a gift card.
L.P.D. says do not fall for this scam. They say do not pay and just hang up.
