OLIVET, Mich. (WSYM) - The 29th annual Olivet Fireman’s Festival was held in the city Saturday.

The community event is held every year to help raise money for the fire department in funding the department's public education programs in local schools.

A new "firepup" costume will be purchased as well.

Firefighters say they are happy to see families come out for the event and to see the department growing.

“It's nice to be able to talk to them and get thanked for what we do,” said Townsend Montgomery, a firefighter with the department. “It puts a smile on my face, It puts a smile on their face and the best part is when the little kids come up to the fire truck and just want a picture.”

A parade was also held Saturday.

This year marks the first year the festival also included a carnival.

Organizers estimate about 5,000 people came out for the event.

Over $1,000 was raised Saturday.

The event carried on into the evening with fireworks being set off at dusk.
