LANSING, Mich. — Americans paid their respects Monday to Justice John Paul Stevens as he lied in repose inside the Supreme Court's Great Hall.
Six supreme court justices including Justice Elana Kagan, who replaced Stevens, took part in the ceremony. She called Stevens a brilliant man who had a deep commitment to equal justice for all.
"He thought that no person, no matter how high and mighty, was above the law," Justice Kagan said.
Stevens will be buried in a private ceremony Tuesday in Arlington on National Cemetery.
State flags are also at half-staff until Wednesday to honor the late justice, following an order from Gov. Whitmer.
Appointed by Michigan's Gerald Ford in 1975, Stevens served on the court for 35 years.
