LANSING, Mich. — The Alzheimer’s Foundation of America (AFA) will host a free virtual educational conference as part of its national Educating America Tour to help Michigan residents affected by Alzheimer’s disease during the COVID-19 crisis on Tuesday, October 6, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. EST. The conference, which is free and open to everyone, will provide information and advice from health and caregiving experts. To register, go to www.alzfdn.org/tour [alzfdn.org].

“Knowledge is a useful and powerful tool that can help make any situation easier to navigate. That’s especially true now as more than 190,000 Michigan families are caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr., AFA’s President & CEO. “We want individuals who are caring for someone with Alzheimer’s to know about the resources available to help them and steps that they can take to improve their loved one’s care and quality of life. This conference will bring that information directly to families without having to leave their homes.”

Dr. Mehmet Oz, host of The Dr. Oz Show, will be a guest speaker and share his family’s personal Alzheimer’s story regarding the diagnosis of his mother, Suna Oz, last year. Dr. Oz will describe how the diagnosis impacted his family, as well as share tips to promote good brain health and healthy aging.

Sessions during the AFA virtual conference will include:

  • Examining Psychotropic and Opioid Prescribing to Persons Living with Dementia in the Community – Donovan Maust, MD, MS, will discuss trends and outcomes of prescribing psychotropic and opioid medications for individuals living with dementia, as well as provide an overview of research he is conducting regarding the use of these medications in long-term care settings. Dr. Maust is an Associate Professor of Psychiatry and Associate Director of the Geriatric Psychiatry Program at the University of Michigan, as well as a Research Scientist at the Center for Clinical Management Research, VA Ann Arbor Healthcare System.
  • Medicaid Asset Protection Planning – Evan H. Farr, CELA, CAP, a Certified Elder Law Attorney with the National Elder Law Foundation, will discuss Medicaid long-term care planning. He will provide strategies to protect your assets, while still meeting the strict guidelines needed to qualify for Medicaid benefits, in order to provide the best possible care for your loved ones. Evan is on the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys’ Council of Advanced Practitioners and Owner of the Farr Law Firm.
  • Take a Break Before You Break– Breeda Miller, Past President of the National Speakers Association Michigan and a former family caregiver, will provide strategies in self-care for caregivers. She will discuss the challenges and importance of reducing caregiver stress during COVID-19, as well as share stories, creative solutions and inspiring ideas to help caregivers.
