Meridian Township Police and the Okemos School District had additional safety measures for students, and staff Tuesday. Meridian Township police were at Okemos school buildings.
FOX 47 News crews spotted officers at the high school Tuesday morning. Officers reportedly are at every school in the district. Okemos Superintendent Alena Zachery-Ross sent a message to parents confirming the increased security measures at the buildings.
She told parents in an email, children will have a normal school schedule today. "They will experience a few additional steps of reporting when entering the building," Zachery Ross wrote in her email.
Meridian Township police say the added security was in response to cards or letters received by dozens of staff and former students. The Okemos School District has reported the letters to police over the last week, which kick-started the investigation.
Police say there was no threat of violence toward any staff, student, or letter recipients. The letters do not constitute a criminal act but did concern recipients. Police note that similar letters were sent to staff of Michigan State University. Police say they believe the man knew all of the people he sent letters to.
Local police worked with St. Louis, Missouri Police and an individual was located who officers believe sent the letters. Police are working to understand the alleged senders intent and assess his well-being.
A felony warrant for malicious destruction of property was issued for the accused individual. The charge stems from an event that took place Friday evening in Meridian Township. Police say that event was not related to Okemos Public Schools, its staff, and students.
