A Wee Bit Irish In Grand Ledge

Posted

LANSING, MI. (WSYM) - From cook-offs to music and even a parade. The city of Grand Ledge is home to one of the larger Saint Patrick's Day celebrations in mid-Michigan. That's where FOX 47's Marcus Dash spent his day today.

If you didn't know any better you'd think this was once Irish territory with the amount of Celtic pride I've seen. 2018 marks the 17th year for a Saint Patrick's day parade here.

"I was tired of being stuck inside all winter and this was a good day to get out and get ready for spring here," said Mike Coll.

The sunny skies certainly helps the people of Grand Ledge carry out their annual day-long Saint Patrick's Day festivities.

It all starts with the American Legion Irish stew off where different people bring out their family recipes and compete for the area's ultimate stew. One chef gave me the tip of making a good stew.

"Meat and beef, and I don't like lamb it is a little pungent, and beer," said Victoria McNally.

After the stew off people travel to the day's main event.

The annual Grand Ledge St. Patrick's Day parade. Residents love this parade because it brings the town together.

"It's just really fun, it's a nice way to celebrate the holiday with a bunch of other people," said Lauren Gibbons.

"I just like seeing all the people get excited all the floats coming by, kids running around," said Coll.

Lauren Gibbons has been attending Grand Ledge's festivities for quite a while and says this shows that Saint Patrick's Day is more than just a holiday of drinking.

"It is one of the few places in Lansing where you can see a parade and also celebrate Irish heritage as opposed to just party," said Gibbons.

Next year the Grand ledge opera house and chamber of commerce will keep the celebrations going.
