A look at Nassar survivors' settlement details

Posted

MSU's historic settlement with the hundreds of women sexually abused by Larry Nassar is expected to be signed off on next week.

FOX 47 got a first look at the details of the $500-million settlement since last week's filing in the civil lawsuit, which marks the first time it has been released publicly.

FOX 47 told you in May that an agreement had been reached which was then approved by the MSU Board of Trustees last month.

What's interesting is that the settlement includes a controversial provision regarding three Nassar related bills; Basically, if they passed and became law, the deal was off the table.

Well, those bills did not pass.

As we've reported, MSU will pay a total of $425-million dollars to 333 survivors who have already come forward.

The settlement also clarifies the purpose of the $75-million set aside for future claimants.

MSU will be allowed to use up to eight-percent of that 75-million to defend itself against future lawsuits related to Nassar.

Once everyone signs the settlement next week, MSU will have thirty days to deposit the $425-million into a qualified settlement fund.

MSU has said it will pay the settlement through bonds, which the university will repay through insurance, investments and interest.

The amount that each survivor will get depends on each case, including whether they were a minor when the assaults happened and whether penetration was involved.

The average award is expected to be just over $1-million.
