This Super Fun Race Series, with a super hero theme, raises funds to purchase food from local Food Banks for school kids in participating schools (over 70) in Ingham, Eaton, Clinton, Shiawassee, and Wayne Counties in Mid and SE Michigan.

Weekend Survival Kits was founded in 2012 under the name Many Hands, Inc. and soon changed to Weekend Survival Kits to adequately describe the program which provides food for qualifying school kids (generally K-5th grade). The program provides kits of food to cover the food gap at home over the weekends throughout the school year. “We are committed to making sure that the school kids have supplemental foods over the weekend so that they come to school on Monday morning ready to learn,” shared Founder and Executive Director, Jeff Gorsline. “We hear from teachers that the children who come to school hungry are unable to focus on learning until they have had a chance to have breakfast and lunch, usually supplied from the national school breakfast and lunch programs. These kids aren’t ready to learn until 2pm to 3pm – that is like having 30+ sick days over the school year.”

“Through the generosity of our Presenting Sponsor, Jackson National Life; and the other sponsors, the race proceeds cover the basic costs of the event, meaning every race entry fee goes directly to feeding hungry kids,” says WSK Race Series Director, Cami Shadaker.  “There are still some sponsor positions available, so please email me at Cami@weekendsurvivalkits.org at your earliest opportunity.”
