540 deaths, 14,255 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Michigan

LANSING, Mich. — There are now 540 deaths and 14,255 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Michigan, the state announced on Friday afternoon.

The increase in cases is nearly 2,000 since the day before 10,791, the largest single-day increase.

The age breakdown is below.

0-19 - 1% of cases, 0% of deaths
20-29 - 9% of cases, 1% of deaths
30-39 - 13% of cases, 2% of deaths
40-49 - 17% of cases, 6% of deaths
50-59 - 20% of cases, 12% of deaths
60-69 - 18% of cases, 20% of deaths
70-79 - 13% of cases, 24% of deaths
80+ - 8% of cases, 35% of deaths

Both the Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and MDHHS Chief Medical Executive Dr. Joneigh Khaldun said that at this point — Michigan could now be five weeks away from its peak in this outbreak.

“To get through this we must all do our part. Stay hone, stay safe and save lives," said Governor Gretchen Whitmer during a virtual town hall on the coronavirus Thursday night.

On Friday, Whitmer signed an executive order protecting workers who stay home when they or their close contacts are sick.

All employers are prohibited from discharging, disciplining or otherwise retaliating against an employee for staying home from work if they or one of their close contacts tests positive for COVID-19 or has symptoms.
