Five people have been charged with child abuse for keeping children living in what Jackson Police describe as "deplorable" conditions, and for refusing to let a four-year-old boy get medical treatment after he burned himself with a butane torch lighter.

The boy ended up with second and third-degree burns and needed skin grafts. Police say the home on Adams Street had five kids and five adults living in it. Not all of them are related.

The adults charged are Oren Ryan, Christina Ryan, Ashlee VanNess, Autumn Tyler, and Robert Newman.

They've all been arraigned on counts of second-degree child abuse and lying to police. Oren Ryan is also charged with tampering with evidence.
