The Eaton County Sheriff's Office has released information about the incident that led to the lockdown.
Deputies were called to the Meijer on West Saginaw after staff saw a man break into a locked case and steal electronics.
Staff saw him crashing his getaway car into other cars in the parking lot. He got out and ran after crashing into a tree near the corner of Michigan Avenue and Mall Drive South.
He was seen running near Winans Elementary School, which is when the Sheriff's Office requested the lockdown of Winans, Waverly Middle School and Waverly High School.
Police dogs lost track of the man.
Sheriff's Office investigators say they have identified him and are requesting charges from the prosecutor's office.
