LANSING, Mich. (WSYM) — The CDC estimates less than two out of every million children in the U.S. will get it.

Michigan confirmed its second case this year of that mysterious paralyzing illness called Acute Flaccid Myelitis (AFM).

The newest patient is in Oakland County.

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services is working with the Centers for Disease Control to figure out what causes the polio-like illness to infect us.

Acute Flaccid Myelitis is a disease that attacks the nervous system.

"it can go from leg weakness ultimately to weakness of other muscles in the body, like the ones in the diaphragm, which supports your ability to breathe."

The disease was first discovered in 2014, and although they are in the early stages of research, officials say that the best way to prevent the spread of AFM is to keep clean.

'Washing your hands is really important when it comes to this condition. Make sure you're up to date on your vaccinations, particularly the polio vaccine."

Officials say treatment needs to happen long before a diagnosis, as AFM can take weeks to diagnose.
