Mid-Michigan companies are expected to hire 1,220 people and 150 apprentices, and to endure that they are trained, the Capital Area Michigan Works! And the Michigan Talent Investment Agency are investing by awarding $2.28 million in training grants.
It is anticipated that an average of $1,175 will be spent on each trainee, with hourly wages averaging $21.11.
According to a release, nearly 3,000 workers will be trained under the Skilled Trades Training Fund. Employers and local, state and federal partnerships contributed more than $69 million in supporting leverage for these trainings. That figure includes support such as paid wages while the workers are in training.
“Collaboration is key to our region, and the Skilled Trades Training Fund is another supporting example,” said Edythe Hatter-Williams, Capital Area Michigan Works! CEO. “It’s essential for partnerships between Capital Area Michigan Works!, economic development and educational partners in order to complete the demand-driven training.”
Gov. Rick Snyder recommended the creation of the STTF in 2013 to help fulfill the talent needs of Michigan’s booming economy. The STTF provides a marketable skill or recognized credential to individuals so participating businesses and employees have the necessary talent to compete in a global market. Despite the name of these funds, their use is not limited to skilled trades careers.
