A duplex on the 400 block of W. Lapeer St. is boarded up from the inside.
Lansing police say 27-year-old Anthony Lorenzo Yarber was shot there Friday night and died at the scene.
Some witnesses say there was a party inside the duplex at the time of the shooting. They were inside when they heard a commotion.
"We heard this boom, and then someone was banging on the floor screaming for help," said Azharea, who was at the party. "We came outside and stood in front of the house."
Azharea says she thought it was play-fighting, but then she looked up to a second-floor window.
"We saw a man cocking the gun back and forth like it was stuck, and then he shot it."
Azharea says she and friends ran back inside and up to the room where Yarber was shot, and saw him bleeding on the floor, asking for help.
Witnesses say that this event has shocked the neighborhood, as it doesn't happen too often.
"It's a quiet neighborhood, we have kids on this block," said Maurice, who lives nearby. "I've been through this situation, so I want to say prayers to his family. Sorry for their loss."
"This never really happens on this side of town, so it was scary," said Azharea.
Police say the death is considered suspicious, and is not random.
