'Bring potholes back' sign turns heads, slows traffic

Posted

Potholes get the attention of drivers, now a sign threatening to add them has people talking.

“Slows everybody down, they see that sign they slow right down”, said Parma resident Frank Oulch.

The signs reads, “Please slow down or we'll put the potholes back”.

“I like the sign”, said Cabot Drive resident Vonny Sayres.

“I think it's great for people to see how fast they're going.”

Cabot Avenue in Parma used to be a bumpy ride, riddled with potholes.

“All the things that used to slow drivers down, rough roads, pot holes, they're gone so drivers tend to speed up a little”, said Christopher Bolt, managing director at the Jackson County Department of Transportation.

Bolt told FOX 47 his team designed the traffic signs to get the driver's attention and remind them to slow down.

“We are trying to be creative”, Bolt explained.

“We are trying to get everyone's attention and uh create an awareness about speed through neighborhoods.”

Mike Baldwin lives on Cabot Avenue. He says he has mixed feelings about the new sign.

“Hopefully it reminds people to slow down”, Baldwin told Cryss Walker.

“We got kids and pets around here that don't need to be ran over.”

Some neighbors say the caution sign isn't enough.

They believe the speed limit should also be posted.

“Once people gets pass that sign the gas pedal hits and like mike said, there's kids running around here, you know and it worries me”, said Sayres.

Officials say the new signs are also installed with radar feedback to collect speed data for a road safety awareness program.
