Today, a Michigan deputy plans to honor fallen police officers with feat few can imagine.
Kent County Deputy Reserve Matt Garbarino will run 170 miles in four days – beginning in Detroit and ending in Saint Joseph. First, he'll meet with Top Brass and DPD's Color Guard for the National Anthem. After, he'll start his 170-mile journey carrying a flag with the names of five fallen officers:
- Officer Fadi Shakur
- Officer Darren Weathers
- Officer Glenn Doss, Jr.
- Officer Scott Stewart
- Officer Michael Scanlon
The five names will be on what's known as the "thin blue line" flag.
Last year marked the first year for what’s now considered the annual “Run Across Michigan." The man behind it, Matt Garbarino, runs to raise awareness for those who’ve lost their lives in the line of duty.
In 2018, it was powerful — to see people line the street, run with him to thank him — it clearly means a lot to so many people.
“After that run ended and I was able to see the impact and just the awareness… the interactions there was so much good that came from it… I felt the journey wasn’t over,” Garbarino said.
The run begins at 9:30 a.m.
