Ikea, the mega home furnishing store, is scouting for a second location in metro Detroit, according to Crain’s Detroit Business.

The paper reports the Ikea Group is looking at spaces in Macomb and Oakland counties.

Ikea has not announced any formal plans for a new store, but sources told Crain’s that the group had been looking at five locations, but has since narrowed down the list.

Possible locations include about 30 acres near I-94 and M-59 in Chesterfield Township. The site is near Cabela’s, which opened earlier this year.

Crain’s reported that several locations in Oakland County are being scouted, but the locations are not known. The paper speculated possible large sites such as the shuttered Pontiac Silverdome, and Summit Place Mall in Waterford Township.

The new Ikea building could be as large as 300,000 square feet. The first store in the state opened in 2006 in Canton, and employs 300 employees.
