Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder signed a bill on Friday morning that will reimburse Flint residents for their water bills.
The $30 million budge supplemental was unanimously approved by the legislature, and will give Flint families credits for the portion of their water bill used for drinking, cooking and bathing.
The credit will be applied to water bills until the water in Flint is determined to be safe for drinking. Anyone who is behind on their water bills will also have all unpaid charges and late fees dropped.
“Flint residents should not have to pay for water they cannot drink,” Snyder said in a release. “This credit will reimburse residents for payments made since April 2014 for the portion of water used for drinking, bathing and cooking. Making the water that comes out of the tap in Flint safe to drink again is the top priority. In addition, this credit will provide some financial relief to residents who have been dealing firsthand with this issue.”
