Fiat Chrysler says they are planning layoffs for their plant in Windsor.
FCA says 1,500 jobs will be affected – some workers will be laid off and others will be offered retirement packages.
The automotive company says the move is being made because they're cutting the plant from three shifts to two. The last time FCA ran two shifts at their Windsor plant was 1993.
FCA sent the following statement to 7 Action News:
“This action will affect approximately 1500 people. Retirement packages will be offered to eligible employees. The Company will make every effort to place indefinitely laid off hourly employees in open full-time positions as they become available based on seniority.”
Unifor Local 444 is pushing for a quick return to three shifts and is demanding a meeting with FCA's CEO.
The announcement comes after a previous announcement in late February where FCA said it will build a new assembly plant in Detroit, along with investing in five existing Michigan plants. The move will create 6,500 new jobs.
