Grand Rapids police have arrested an FBI agent after a bizarre shooting incident near a popular fitness center.
It's not known what prompted the FBI agent to allegedly open fire early this morning.
It's also not clear if that agent was even assigned to the state of Michigan.
"How this incident started or what brought this on right now our investigators are trying to get to the bottom of that,” is what Grand Rapids police are saying.
It happened near a Grand Rapids Planet Fitness gym at about 2 am Tuesday.
Police say a special agent with the FBI wielded his gun, then fired 3 shots.
No one was hit by those gunshots.
Local police arrived on scene quickly.
Detectives say that special agent also shot at a police sergeant attempting to make contact with him, prior to being arrested at gunpoint.
The arrest was made in the area of a local shopping mall.
Planet Fitness issued a statement soon after, publicly praising police for a safe conclusion where no one was injured.
The FBI says a team of investigators at their own headquarters is looking into the matter.
"The FBI is aware of some allegations concerning a special agent in Grand Rapids,” says FBI Supervisory Special Agent Ray Johnson. “We're committed to working with the Grand Rapids Police department to ensure the investigation continues."
The agents name hasn't been released.
