The Michigan Secretary of State's Office announced Thursday there have been more absentee ballots requested for the November election than ever before.

According to Secretary of State Joceyln Benson, there have been more than 2.1 million absentee ballot requests, surpassing the 2 million requested for the August primary which held the previous record. The state said that 1.7 million requests were submitted since Aug. 5, the day after the primary.

“Even in the midst of a global pandemic, Michigan’s citizens enthusiastically want to vote, and are taking advantage of the numerous safe, secure and reliable options they have to do so this year,” Benson said in a release. “I only wish their enthusiasm was matched by action from their state legislators, who have passed just one minor election law in 20 months, much to the chagrin of election clerks and voters across our state.”
