The Michigan Department of State said there have been more than 1.6 million absentee ballots sent to voters ahead of the Aug. 4 state primary.

According to the state department, there have been more than 300,000 absentee ballots returned already. That's more than double the number of ballots returned at the same time in 2016.

In all, there were 1,718,384 absentee applications received with just three weeks until the election. That's up more than 360% compared to 2016 when there were 475,046 applications.

The number of ballots returned is also up nearly 240% with 323,657 returned this year compared to 134,900 in 2016.

There is also less than a week left to register to vote online for the August primary at Michigan.gov/vote, and once registered, you can request an absentee ballot. People can also register in person at their local clerk through election day.
