Michael Nichols said living in his home has made him sick, and it's all because of what he says is lurking in his basement.

"The neighborhood residents feces and urine vomit and whatever else they flush down the toilet," Nichols said.

A half an inch of raw sewage, but despite being disabled, and on dialysis, this unbearable scene, he told 7 Action News isn't new.

In the last ten years, he said it has happened 12 to 13 times.

He told 7 Action News it all began in 2008, the sewage from the homes around him pumping into his basement drain.

Initially, Nichols said he was told it was his responsibility but told 7 Action News he later learned it was the city that needed to install a specific valve reversing the direction that the sewage flows.

When pressing the city to fix the underlying issue, he said he was told he’d have to front the costs, that they weren't resourced to do the job themselves.

Without paying, he'll have to live with it, but breathing in the substance is dangerous, known to cause headaches, nausea, liver damage and respiratory disorders, something an ill person can’t afford.

Other damages include his furnace and hot water tank, which were wiped out by the flood.

So 7 Action News went to the city of Inkster for answers. No one spoke to 7's cameras but within a few hours, a city worker was back at the home accessing the damages.

The city says they are going to work with the homeowner to get furnace and hot water tank working first, then find a solution for the sewage in the next 48 hours.

7 Action News will continue to track the story until there is resolve.
