Detroit Police say a man took his own life following a confrontation with officers this morning.

It happened around 3 a.m. in the 9400 block of Michigan Avenue on the city's southwest side. Police say they were responding to a domestic disturbance call when they saw a man in the parking lot of the Victory Inn hotel. Officers say the man had a gun and would not put it down. Police say they fired a shot and that's when the man turned the gun on himself.

But at least one witness has a different story. A man who didn't want to be identified says the victim was urinating by a fence when police showed up. The witness says when the man reached down to pull up his pants, the officers shot him.

Detroit police originally told 7 Action News the man fired multiple shots at officers before taking his own life.
