Governor Gretchen Whitmer said the decision regarding getting kids back in school will be made closer to start dates.

She said the state needs to know what certain actions will yield in terms of COVID-19 cases.

"There's not a perfect time where we have a precise understanding," she said. "We all have to remain nimble and it's hard. We're doing planning for lots of different contingencies."

Whitmer said that if Michigan looked like Florida in terms of numbers, it would not be advisable to resume school.

Where the numbers area headed will dictate any policy that the state will embrace, the governor said.

"This isn't a political issue. This is about making sure that when we resume, we do so in a way that is safe."
