In an op-ed for the Detroit Free Press, Governor Gretchen Whitmer said Michigan's state of emergency will end "in a matter of months."

However, she said it would be "irresponsible" to forecast a date.

She said several factors will inform when, including the dispersal of a vaccine, the availability of therapeutics and a better understanding of immunity.

She added that so far, progress is "promising" and the state is making plans to distribute the vaccine, which could be as early as this fall.

"In the meantime, we must stay the course," she said.

She also defended the Emergency Powers of the Governor Act of 1945, saying that swift action "remains critical" to saving lives.

"Like everyone, I want this emergency to end. But I will continue to do everything in my power to save lives."
