LANSING, Mich. — Michigan now has 5,334 deaths and 55,608 cases of coronavirus, the state reported Wednesday.
That's up 504 cases and 68 deaths since Tuesday.
Of the 68 new deaths, 14 of those were identified during a Vital Records review.
MDHHS staff conduct regular reviews of death certificate data maintained in Vital Records reporting systems.
As a part of this process, the state says record that identify COVID-19 as a contributing factor to death are compared against all laboratory confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the Michigan Disease Surveillance System.
If a death certificate is matched to a confirmed COVID-19 case and that record in the MDSS does not indicate the individual died, the MDSS record is updated to indicate the death
Overall, 33,168 people have recovered from the virus, the state said. Those numbers are updated every Saturday.
