LANSING, Mich. — Michigan saw an increase of 18 deaths from coronavirus and 125 cases from the day before, according to new numbers released by the state health department on Tuesday.

According to the state, there are now 5,790 confirmed deaths from COVID-19 and 60,189 cases in Michigan.

The state also reports there are another 6,080 probable cases of coronavirus and 244 probable deaths.

Nearly 45,000 people have recovered from the virus, and there are also 9,300 active cases in the state.

On Monday, the state also changed requirements for nursing homes, now requiring regular testing and timely reporting of cases.

According to the MDHHS, as of Monday, there have been 7,163 cases and 1,947 deaths among patients in nursing facilities.

Nearly 34% of the deaths from COVID-19 and 12% of the cases in the state state came from nursing facilities. More than 1 in 4 people who contracted COVID-19 in a nursing facility died.

Researchers in England say they have the first evidence that a drug can improve survival from COVID-19.

A steroid called dexamethasone reduced deaths by up to one third in severely ill hospitalized patients, according to results released Tuesday.

The study was led by the University of Oxford and involved thousands of patients randomly assigned to get the drug or just usual care.
