(WSYM) — Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer provided an update on the state's response to COVID-19 on Monday afternoon.

Whitmer was joined by MDHHS Chief Medical Executive Dr. Joneigh Khaldun and new MDHHS Director Elizabeth Hertel for the update.

It comes after an update on Friday where Whitmer announced that Michigan restaurants would be able to open up on Feb. 1 with capacity restrictions and a curfew.

She also announced that former MDHHS Director Robert Gordon abruptly announced his resignation on Friday.

Whitmer was asked several times if she asked Gordon to resign, but did not answer the question, instead, thanking Gordon for his service at the state.

According to Khaldun, the number of cases involving the new COVID-19 variant has increased and it is also now in Wayne County, with at least 17 cases between Wayne and Washtenaw counties.

The state also highlighted actions for increasing food access for people who have been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.
