Kroger retracts attempt to collect overpayment of employees' COVID-19 Emergency Pay

A post about a payroll error within the Kroger Company has gone viral, now the company is responding.

Some employees received additional COVID-19 Emergency Pay due to a company payroll error. In a letter sent to those employees, the company requested repayment of the overpayment, which totaled $461.60 and added that if the repayment isn't made there would be "further collection efforts."

The letter sparked outrage with the public and Kroger company has since retracted its request for repayment.

"This was an unfortunate payroll accounting error," a spokesperson with Kroger Company said in a statement to 7 Action News. "We’ve since instructed our payroll department to directly inform the small number of associates affected by the recent overpayments of COVID-19 Emergency Leave pay that we will not seek repayment."
