Kent County hasn’t seen any large COVID-19 outbreaks in K-12 schools and university cases seem to be stabilizing.

The county and schools have been able to identify cases early – before they turned into clusters or outbreaks that could affect the whole school, said Dr. Adam London, administrative health officer at the Kent County Health Department.

Encouraging university students to reduce risk, avoid social gatherings or unnecessary travel and using masks and good hygiene has helped get those cases under control.

The county’s rate of positive COVID-19 tests – as a percentage of all tests taken – is currently at 2.9 percent.

That rate is up slightly from last week but is still below 4 percent, which is the state’s baseline of concern.

Key hospital facilities were below 10 percent utilization for coronavirus patients as of Sept. 17, according to the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services.

Of 2,939 hospital beds, 2.2 percent were occupied by COVID-19 patients. In addition, 4.7 percent of 384 ICU beds and 1 percent of 503 ventilators were taken up by coronavirus cases.
