Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer addressed the coronavirus and the vice presidency during a national radio show appearance today.

Whitmer was a guest on SirusXM's "Signal Boost," which is hosted by Zerlina Maxwell and Jess McIntosh.

During the interview, Whitmer covered the VP question, as well as the higher rate of the coronavirus among African-Americans and the shortage of medical personal protective equipment.

When asked about being a possible vice presidential candidate, Whitmer said, "Every ounce of energy and focus that I have is going into getting my state through this tough moment. ... Right now, my sole focus is being the best governor that I can be."

She went on to say that Dr. Joneigh Khaldun, the state's chief medical executive, is watching "very closely" the higher rate of coronavirus cases among African-Americans in the state. Whitmer said, "There is a racial component to that. Undeniably ... This is an important aspect that we need to understand." She addresses the topic at the 55-second mark.

The governor also added the PPE shortage is "incredibly mind-boggling."
